About my Teeth

Parts of a tooth

Enamel is the hardest stuff in your body. It covers the outside portion of the part of the tooth that you can see in your mouth, the part sticking out of our gums.  Under the enamel is the dentin part of the tooth.  Dentin is much softer than enamel and can decay easily. And in the middle of the tooth is the pulp.  That is where all the nerves and blood vessels live.  The root part of the tooth doesn't have enamel it is covered by a substance called cementum.

When do our teeth come in

Primary teeth are also called "baby" teeth.  Permanent teeth are the adult teeth that come in when we lose our "baby" teeth.  It is very important that we take good care of our teeth even if they are still "baby" teeth.  Baby teeth help the adult teeth come in by acting as guides.  If we loose a baby tooth too soon then it can cause our adult tooth to come in the wrong place.  So make sure you take good care of your teeth by visiting your dentist or dental hygienist regularly.
